Data Matters: Monthly Updates from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Welcome to this month’s edition of Data Matters! We’re excited to share
information about upcoming events and new opportunities to engage with data
on campus.

Upcoming Got Data? Presentation - TODAY Mar. 24!

Our next Got Data? presentation features Todd Moravec from Student
Financial Services on Monday, Mar. 24 at 1 p.m. in the Alumni Conference
Room. Todd will share information about the Cardinal Grants initiative and
its outcomes. Light refreshments will be served. If you are interested in
presenting at a future Got Data? event, contact us at OIE at plattsburgh.edu.

Spring 2025 Census Update

Our preliminary enrollment and retention figures based on our Spring 2025
census are promising. Considering enrollment, we are noticing a 2.8%
year-over-year total enrollment increase from Spring 2024 and a strong,
20%, increase in graduate enrollment. Fall-to-Spring retention is at a five
year high with overall undergraduate matriculated student retention at
93.3%, first-time, first-year student retention at 90.6%, and transfer
student retention at 91.6%. We are hopeful that these positive trends will
continue into the next academic year, as we continue to work hard to
support our students.

Data Challenge

New this month, OIE is introducing a data challenge of the month. You will
be presented with a scenario and access to related data, and you will have
the freedom to use whichever tool or platform you are comfortable with to
generate an insight or tell a story. We would love to hear from you - your
work may help inform future organizational analysis! Your visualization,
KPI, or story might even be featured in the following month’s newsletter.

*March 2025 Scenario:* Consider this infographic
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RPg03na3e6rE3goHXdADupo5WgqhwP9v/view?usp=drive_link>
by the organization Statista. It depicts job market data in the travel &
tourism industry from 2019-2024, and forecasts an increase by 2034. Now
consider this data
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PDR-be6w6xjsgllhByMHb93WXagtTIw0/edit?usp=drive_link&ouid=102440456875934130971&rtpof=true&sd=true>
from SUNY Plattsburgh. It contains the number of students applying to,
enrolling at, and earning degrees according to each division and academic
department for the same time period as the infographic. Your task is to
seek out trends that could inform planning at SUNY Plattsburgh. One
question, for example, might be whether student application or enrollment
in majors related to travel and tourism follow the trends of the industry?
There are many angles to analyze, choose what resonates with you. If you’re
interested in participating but aren’t sure where to start, please contact
Levi Martinez (Lmart008 at plattsburgh.edu).

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and hearing your
perspectives in our new Data Challenge.

Best regards,

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness
