Colleagues,

I'd like to share a bit more information about the session the deans and I
have planned for this afternoon in support of classroom teaching in
relation to the Chauvin trial and verdicts. We have planned 5 areas of
questions that will be discussed in breakout rooms during our 90 minutes
together. You may join the session by using this Zoom link
<https://plattsburgh.zoom.us/j/93846510018>. We are sharing the questions
now for your consideration and reflection. We hope to see many of you
later, though please know that this is an invitation for faculty who are
interested in attending; there is no mandate that faculty need to attend.
We know there are teaching conflicts and other responsibilities that may
not make participating possible. The questions that will guide our
discussion:

Breakout Room #1: I teach in a discipline that does not lend itself to
discussion of social issues or social justice. How can I respond to
student feedback that they would like the Chauvin trial to be addressed in
their classrooms? Is there a way to connect the impact of the trial on
students to my course focus?

Breakout Room #2: I am a BIPOC faculty member who is teaching in majority
white classrooms. I have concerns and feelings specific to my identity
that are not separate from my role as a teaching faculty member. How do I
honor my own knowledge and feelings while I am trying to also support
students?

Breakout Room #3: I am aware that I may (or do) have students who have a
variety of perspectives on how this trial plays out. They may want to see
Chauvin convicted, they may view Chauvin as unfairly judged, and/or they
may share a mix of feelings. How can I create space for a variety of
perspectives in my classrooms? Do I believe that different perspectives on
the trial are even acceptable? How do I honor varied perspectives while
not having my own clear perspective dominate the conversation?

Breakout Room #4: I am uncomfortable with some of the charged feelings that
are coming up around this trial. I’d like to bring this into my classroom,
but I am not trained to negotiate the feelings that come up around an event
like this.

Breakout Room #5: I am struggling with my own self care right now. Are
there ways to indicate support for our students without digging into this
topic and further draining myself?
