Office of the Provost/VPAA

The Institute for Ethics in Public Life at SUNY Plattsburgh is seeking a
colloquy coordinator for fall semester 2021 while Institute director Dr.
Jonathan Slater will be on sabbatical.
The Institute has been holding regular Wednesday lunch-hour colloquies
during the academic year since the Institute’s founding in 1999. In
ordinary times, these collegial conversations have been held with
participants seated around a conference table in the congenial atmosphere
of the Institute’s offices in Hawkins Hall. The colloquies completely
pivoted to a virtual environment at the start of fall semester 2020. While
we are planning on a return to in-person events for fall 2021, much will
depend on the numbers of attendees at fall events alongside of social
distancing guidelines.
Institute colloquies have consistently reflected the purpose of the
Institute. Guided by a belief in education's role of fostering informed
discourse, the Institute upholds the idea that citizens should make sound
choices based on free speech and that those in public life should lead in
humility and govern for the public good.
Colloquy leaders typically include current and past Institute Fellows,
senior scholars, faculty members from the college and other institutions,
and an array of thought leaders from the community. Colloquy topics tend to
focus on a wide range of interdisciplinary research and pedagogy that
influence and promote moral competence and ethical practice in public life.
Colloquies are open to the entire SUNY Plattsburgh community. The Institute
for Ethics in Public Life is generously supported by gifts to the
Plattsburgh College Foundation.
The colloquy coordinator will be responsible for publicizing, hosting and
moderating 12 colloquies in fall semester 2021, as well as developing and
delivering a critical issues forum – in collaboration with the Redcay
Honors Center – to mark the campus’s annual observance of Constitution Day
in mid-September 2021. Because much of the preparation for the fall
colloquies and Constitution Day will occur over the summer prior to the
start of fall semester, the colloquy coordinator will be expected to work
during the summer in tandem with the Institute director to plan and
organize these gatherings.
The colloquy coordinator should be a current member of SUNY Plattsburgh’s
full-time teaching faculty and preferably a past Institute Fellow, someone
familiar with and active in the work of the Institute and committed to
sustaining its guiding precepts. The position comes with a semester’s
stipend of $1000.
If you are interested in coordinating the Ethics Institute colloquies in
fall 2021, please compose a statement of 1-2 pages (double-spaced)
describing your interest in the position, experience related to the
responsibilities outlined above, and your vision for the fall semester
colloquies. Send your statement and a current CV in attachments via email
to Dr. Anne Herzog, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs,
provost-office at plattsburgh.edu. Deadline: Friday, April 30, 2021, 4:00 p.m.
Thank you.
