[Important Information for Students] Phishing scam awareness -newest scams are fooling more of our students/staff

Good morning,

Please be advised that the latest round of phishing scams hitting campus
inboxes are a bit more elaborate than usual and several folks have been
caught up in the scams.

Here is an example of the latest scam:

You'll notice the following:

   - Its coming from a compromised campus account.
   - The account is being used to send messages advertising a "remote
   research assistant position"
   - Indicates that the position will be supervised by a legitimate faculty
   member on campus - in this case "Dr. Michael Walters"
   - Asking students to apply to an email address that ends in @gmail.com
   - Email is signed "Office of Academic Programs"

If you respond to this message or respond back to the @gmail.com account,
here's what happens:

   - The bad actor conducts a fake interview over email, indicates that
   there is some required equipment to purchase.
   - They send you a "reimbursement" check for the equipment.
   - If you deposit the check it will not clear and they will request
   partial payment from you to move forward on the equipment sale.
   - You get scammed out of Money!!!!

“STOP – LOOK – VERIFY”

   - STOP before clicking
   - LOOK at the sender and the validity of any link's
   - VERIFY through another method and contact the Helpdesk if not
   absolutely sure!


Unfortunately, these phishing scams are ever changing and impossible to
