[Important Information for Students] Immediate changes to Email Spam checking rules

Good afternoon,

As many of you are aware we have seen an significant increase in a wide
variety of phishing scams. Most, if not all, of these are being sent using
compromised campus accounts. As part of our mail setup, we have various
rules in place that bypass some of our normal spam protections when email
messages originate from accounts within our @plattsburgh.edu domain. The
thought was that these messages are coming from "trusted campus accounts"
and we wanted to be sure these messages were appropriately delivered to the
receipent inboxes and not get mistakenly delivered to spam folders.

This practice is no longer acceptable.

*What is changing?*

*Effective immediately we will be adjusting our email handling so that even
messages that originate from @plattsburgh.edu <http://plattsburgh.edu> will
be subject to broader set of google spam rules checking.*

*What does this mean for you?*

*This could result in a slight increase in legitimate messages being
delivered to your spam folders. You should be checking your spam folder
daily. *

*What have we done to ensure most legitiate messages won't end up spam?*

We have a way to identify and allow an approved a list of all internal and
external services that send email to our users on our behalf. We have added
all of these services to our SPF record so messages that originate from
those services would get delivered as normal. This has been in place for
some time and working as expected.

*What if a message ended up in spam but was legitimate?*

Use the tools in the google email interface  to mark it as "not spam", and
then notify the helpdesk and it will be investigated.

We are sorry for any inconvience this may cause but its necessary at this
time.
