Good Afternoon Members of the Campus Community,
As promised, we’re sending more details on the recent death of Dr. Ann Tracy, distinguished teaching professor of English emerita, who died Dec. 28, 2025.
Dr. Tracy joined the faculty in the Department of English as an instructor Sept. 1, 1970. Four years later, she was promoted to assistant professor and associate professor five years after that, Sept. 1, 1979.
She made full professor in September 1983, and in 1992, Dr. Tracy was named a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, the first woman at SUNY Plattsburgh to be so named since the SUNY Board of Trustees established the distinguished ranks program in 1963.
Dr. Tracy retired in December 2000 but returned as an adjunct in August 2015. She continued teaching as an adjunct through spring 2020.
She grew up in Charleston, Maine, and attended Higgins Classical Institute, where her father was headmaster and about which she later wrote in her book, “Higher Ground: A Memoir of Higgins Classical Institute.” She holds degrees from Colby College, Brown University, and the University of Toronto, from which she earned her doctorate in English literature. In addition to “Higher Ground,” Dr. Tracy authored several books, including her first novel, “Winter Hunger,” in 1990.
A memorial service in Plattsburgh and interment of her ashes in Baptist Cemetery, Charleston, Maine, will take place later in the spring, the dates to be determined later. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center St., Bangor, Maine, 04401, 207-942-8815, www.brookingssmith.com<http://www.brookingssmith.com>.

Our condolences to all who knew and loved her.
Be well and stay safe.
