[Important Information for Employees] The Death of Dr. Gary Brannigan

Dear Members of our College Community,

It is with sadness that we share the news that Dr. Gary Brannigan,
professor emeritus of psychology, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2025 in Saratoga
Springs, N.Y. He was 78.

Dr. Brannigan joined our faculty as an assistant professor in psychology in
September 1973. He was promoted three years later to associate professor
and to full professor in September 1982.

A licenses clinical psychologist and certified school psychologist, Dr.
Brannigan spent many years working with children with disabilities and
their families. In July 2009, he co-authored his first book, “Reading
Disabilities: Beating the Odds,” for parents, teachers and others involved
in educational decision-making for children. A prolific researcher and
writer, he wrote or co-authored more than a dozen more books in his 45
years at SUNY Plattsburgh, often with SUNY Plattsburgh colleague Dr.
Matthew Merrens, professor emeritus of psychology.

A 50-plus-year resident of Plattsburgh, he most recently resided in
Ballston Spa, N.Y., with his wife of 57 years, Linda. Dr. Brannigan retired
from SUNY Plattsburgh in September 2018.

There will be no services. Donations may be made to The Community Hospice
