Dear Campus Community,

On Monday, November 4, 2024, SUNY Plattsburgh will proudly recognize and
celebrate the third anniversary of Black Solidarity Day, an official event
on our academic calendar.

To honor this day, we invite the entire Plattsburgh community to
participate in a Social Justice Teach-In focused on racial and social
justice. This day serves as a powerful opportunity to reflect on the
significance of social justice and civic engagement, fostering awareness of
our interconnectedness and the strength that diverse perspectives bring to
our world.
Kickoff Event

Join us for the official kickoff of Black Solidarity Day on November 4 at
8:15 AM in the Warren Ballrooms of Angell College Center. Doors open at
8:00 AM, and light refreshments will be available. Concurrent sessions will
commence at 9:00 AM and run until 3:50 PM, with a lunch break at noon for
those who wish to recharge.

We are thrilled to feature Dr. Debra Thompson
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/_documents/plattslife/diversity/dr-debra-thompson-keynote-presentation.pdf>
as our Keynote Speaker, presenting as part of the Distinguished Canadian
Address, beginning at 4:15 PM in the Warren Ballrooms. The day will
culminate with a social justice vigil hosted by Black Onyx: The Black
Student Union, starting at 8:00 PM. All sessions are free, and everyone is
welcome!
What Is New This Year?

We are excited to introduce Information Tables to assist attendees with
questions and guidance throughout the day. In our commitment to
inclusivity, we will provide streaming services for our Queensbury students
and employees, as well as participants from other campuses in New York
State and beyond. Expect free giveaways throughout the day, and check out
our new Cool Down Zone in Meeting Room #1 of the Angell College Center,
designed for those seeking a safe space to engage and participate.
Acknowledgments

A special thank you to the entire Black Solidarity Day Planning Committee
and our volunteers, to the SUNY Plattsburgh Communications and Marketing
Team and the Communication Studies Department for promoting and supporting
the event to a wide audience both on and off campus, and to Black Onyx: The
Black Student Union for selecting our theme for the day: “Be the Change You
Wish to See.”

As bell hooks poignantly stated, “To build community requires vigilant
awareness of the work we must continually do to undermine all the
socialization that leads us to behave in ways that perpetuate domination.”
We hope you will join us in this vital work.
