Dear Campus Community,
Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court struck down as unconstitutional
the affirmative action admissions programs for both Harvard and the
University of North Carolina, which in turn severely limits, if not
effectively ends, the use of such programs nationwide. For decades,
race-conscious admissions policies have allowed universities to address
historical inequities in higher education. These policies have also
diversified student populations and increased opportunities to
underrepresented groups, including people of color.
Despite yesterday’s ruling, one fact remains unchanged - SUNY Plattsburgh
is an equity-minded university that is fully committed to supporting all
our BIPOC students and employees.
Our campus will continue to prioritize student success through equitable
recruitment practices, admissions policies, and supportive services that
best meet the diverse and complex needs of all our current and future
students. This is who we are.
Most importantly, we will continue to demonstrate, through intentional
decisions and actions, that we value, respect, and recognize the
contributions and essential roles of our BIPOC community of students,
faculty and staff.
As SUNY Chancellor King stated in his response
<https://www.suny.edu/suny-news/press-releases/6-23/6-29-23/statement.html>
to the ruling: “At SUNY, our resolve to provide opportunity for all has
never been stronger. The commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
will continue to be a factor in every goal we pursue, every program we
create, every policy we promulgate, and every decision we make.”
Sincerely,
Dr. Alexander Enyedi
President
