[Important Information for Employees] Bias Incident Update

Dear Campus Community,


We are writing with a further update on the investigation of an anonymous
email sent to our Interim Director of Undergraduate Admissions. The sender
wrote they had witnessed hate speech committed against the Interim
Director, who is a BIPOC employee.


SUNY Plattsburgh has not been able to identify the origin of the email despite
extensive efforts by University Police, Information Technology Services,
and Human Resources. We appreciate all those who came forward to share what
they knew, but these efforts to gather additional information about the
person(s) who allegedly made the racist statements have not been successful.


Due to this lack of tangible leads, the investigation is now inactive.
Please know that inactive investigations are eligible for reactivation
should additional, tangible information become available. In such a case,
the university will reactivate the investigation within limitations set
forth, and allowed by university policy and law. Inactive investigations
are not considered closed.

Last week, a formal meeting was held with the victim to discuss the
investigation outcome and to provide resources to best help him feel safe
and supported on campus. In addition, we continue to work with the victim
in an effort to ensure their staff has the appropriate support as valued
members of the university community.  We ask that all on campus respect his
privacy and allow him to work through this process.

Now, more than ever, it is up to all of us to come together to create and
sustain a truly equitable and inclusive campus culture. It is not enough to
be a bystander but we should strive to be an upstander - to speak up and
out when people are oppressed and suppressed. The work continues.
