Dear Campus Community,
I would like to express heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended the
campus Speak Out session in Memorial Gym this past Monday. I heard many of
our BIPOC students describe their frustration and anger about the
challenges they face daily at SUNY Plattsburgh. I was saddened to hear
students speak of feeling invisible, exhausted, and unsupported, and of not
feeling they are treated fairly and equitably. These stories are powerful
evidence that we need to work harder to build an inclusive campus
community.
The Speak Out/Speak Back model requires campus administration to reflect on
what they heard at Monday's Speak Out, determine action items that can be
implemented, and then report back to campus at a Speak Back session. This
work requires deep reflection, thoughtful consideration and careful
planning to make meaningful change. I look forward to leveraging my
leadership team and other administrators to rise to the challenge and
prepare for an in-person Speak Back at the beginning of the Spring 2022
semester. I will announce the date for the Speak Back soon.
Thank you again to everyone who participated and provided such honest
feedback to me and the administrative team. Speak Out sessions provide the
opportunity for our entire campus to come together to communicate, share
experiences, and tell our stories. But this only works when everyone shows
up. Therefore, I hope to see an even greater number of participants -
faculty, staff and students - at our next session as a demonstration of our
collective will and commitment to make authentic, long-lasting change at
SUNY Plattsburgh.
Many are seeking change - it can only happen when we work together.
Most sincerely,
Alexander Enyedi
President
