Dear Campus Community,
I am pleased to announce a new SUNY Plattsburgh initiative called “I’ve
Been Admitted to College” (IBAC). The program aims to inspire local North
Country middle school students to see SUNY Plattsburgh as an exciting
option for their future. SUNY Associate Andrea Enyedi oversaw a successful
IBAC program in Northern California and is initiating and leading the
effort here
in partnership with EHHS Dean Denise Simard. The program is intended to be a
campus-wide collaboration open to all interested in participating.
IBAC will involve bringing North Country 8th graders to campus for a half
day event with tours, panel discussions, interactive and reflective
experiences,
and lunch. At the close of the event, I will personally present the students
with a “Promise of Admission” certificate (that is contingent on them
satisfying all our admission requirements). Follow-up messaging through 9th
& 10th grades will be coordinated with Admissions 11th & 12th grade
recruitment communication.
This foundational work aims to proactively enhance our enrollment and
ultimately
contribute to the economic vibrancy of the North Country. It will help fulfill
our mission as a regional, comprehensive institution by encouraging
first-generation
students to earn baccalaureate degrees and stay in the area to serve their
respective communities as professionals. IBAC will coordinate with our
North Country Scholarship program and will be part of a broader community
effort (including Champlain Valley Educational Services, Clinton Community
College, and College for Every Student/Brilliant Pathways) that supports a
variety of post-secondary education options.
A pilot IBAC event is scheduled for Thursday, November 18th with approximately
fifty 8th grade students from Ticonderoga and Saranac school districts. The
8th graders will meet local SUNY Plattsburgh students, see highlights
of campus,
participate in activities organized by Theater department faculty, enjoy
pizza lunch, and return home with a personalized “Promise of Admission”
certificate. The goal is to get the 8th graders thinking about their
futures and
seeing themselves as potential SUNY Plattsburgh students.
Spring 2022 IBAC events will target additional middle schools in Clinton,
Franklin and Essex counties. Several service opportunities for campus
members to participate -ranging from showcasing academic programs to serving
lunch - will be made available in the new year. Contact Andrea
