we believe in you and are here to help you keep your body and mind in good
health so you have the best SUNY Plattsburgh experience possible.
Stress during the first weeks of college is a normal reaction to sudden
lifestyle changes, new academic pressures, and social adjustments.
Why do the first weeks feel stressful?
You are entirely in charge of your schedule. Missing family, pets, and the
comfort of home creates sudden emotional fatigue. Meeting endless new faces
and trying to “find your people”; quickly can exhaust you. Classes demand
more independent effort with less direct oversight than high school.
Simple Ways to Cope
Stick to a basic schedule: Wake up and sleep around the same time each day
to restore a sense of stability. Get moving: Short walks or campus gym
visits help lower stress hormones. Use campus help: Reach out early to
student health centers, resident advisors, or counseling services if you
feel overwhelmed.
Are there any resources to help me through the first weeks?
