Dear Campus Community,
Welcome back to campus for the Spring 2026 semester. As we begin the
semester, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) would like to take a
moment to remind everyone of the resources, procedures, and training
opportunities available to help keep our campus safe.
1.
Campus Emergency Procedures
Knowing what to do in an emergency is one of the most important steps you
can take to stay safe. Our campus emergency procedures cover a wide range
of situations, including severe weather, fire, medical emergencies, and
active threats. We encourage all students, faculty, and staff to review
these procedures here
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/offices-divisions/student-affairs/emergency-management/emergency-procedures.html>
.
Taking a few minutes now to familiarize yourself with these resources can
make a critical difference during an emergency.
2.
Campus Emergency Notification System (NY-Alert)
The campus emergency notification system is a key tool for sharing urgent
safety information. Please take time to review and update your contact
information to ensure you receive alerts when they are sent.
Here’s how you can check or update your profile:
-
Log in to MyPlattsburgh <http://my.plattsburgh.edu>
-
Scroll to the bottom of the homepage and select “Update my NY Alert
Contact Information” (This is located under the “Emergency Notification”
section towards the bottom of the page.)
-
Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the appropriate option, then
press Continue
-
Follow the prompts to add or update your preferred methods of
notification (e.g., phone, text, email)
-
On the last page, review your information and click “Register me with
NY-Alert” to save your information
Keeping your information current ensures you receive timely alerts during
campus emergencies.
3.
Campus Community Active Shooter Training
OEM and University Police offer in-person active shooter response training
for the campus community. These sessions provide practical guidance on how
to recognize warning signs, maintain situational awareness, and respond
during an active shooter incident using the Run, Hide, Fight approach.
Upcoming training sessions will take place in the Cardinal Lounge on the
following dates:
-
Tuesday, February 10 at 6:00 pm
-
Thursday, February 12 at 12:00 pm (noon)
Employees participating in these in-person sessions may substitute them for
the mandatory online SafeColleges active shooter training.
In addition to campus-wide training, OEM and University Police also offer
personalized site assessments. These assessments involve visiting your
specific location to provide active shooter training, guidance, and the
opportunity to ask questions tailored to your unique working environment.
To request a site assessment, please email carabamj at plattsburgh.edu
.
We strongly encourage all members of the campus community to attend one of
these sessions.
If you have any questions or would like additional information, please do
not hesitate to reach out.
We wish you a safe, successful, and productive Spring 2026 semester.
Sincerely,
Mike Caraballo
