*The Institute for Ethics in Public Life invites you to join us for "The
Ethics of AI in Higher Education," on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 3:30pm for a
hybrid discussion of this topic.*
What are the ethical implications of the different ways AI can be used in
higher education? It is no longer possible to avoid AI or ban its use by
our students, because these technologies have been embedded in the software
and websites we regularly use. For example, Microsoft has integrated
Copilot into Windows and Office applications, Gemini provides summaries of
search results if we use Google, and chatbots are everywhere.
Right now, faculty responses to AI range from encouraging our students to
use it to banning it and changing the way we teach our courses, based on
how we think about student use of AI. Institutional responses are similarly
all over the place, from encouraging faculty to integrate AI into their
classroom to banning it, or leaving it up to the faculty. And none of this
even touches on the ways we faculty members could be using AI to teach our
courses. So far, the technology seems to be outrunning any attempt to
figure out what we should be doing, and why.
The SUNY University Faculty Senate Ethics Committee, of which I am a
member, is working on a green paper on ethical issues with AI in the
college classroom. Our goal is to come up with an overview of the topic
during this year, possibly leading to a white paper on the subject during
the next academic year. To help me understand different perspectives on
this issue, I invite you to join me for an open discussion on the topic
either in-person in the Thomas Moran Seminar Room at the Institute for
Ethics in Public Life (Hawkins 233) or on Zoom (link below).
