Dear Colleagues,

Our community was shaken Thursday with the false report of an active shooter at
Plattsburgh High School, along with several other such alarms across the
North Country region.
<https://www.northcountrypublicradio.org/news/story/47581/20230330/false-reports-of-school-shootings-lock-down-schools-across-north-country>

You may have felt the tremors as you learned of the news. It likely hit you
particularly hard in the wake of mass shootings across our country. In
fact, there have been more mass shootings than days so far this year.
<https://abcnews.go.com/US/mass-shootings-days-2023-database-shows/story?id=96609874>

Although we all shared collective gratitude that it was only a hoax, our
nervous systems don't really distinguish too well between a hoax and the
real thing. Here is a video on how the nervous system responds to trauma.

If you are wondering what to do when you're feeling helpless after a school
shooting (or threat)
<https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/school-shooting-mental-health-201755832.html>
or
if you would like to talk about how to talk to your children about gun
violence and school shootings
<https://www.verywellfamily.com/how-to-talk-to-your-child-about-gun-violence-school-shootings-5205913>,
please reach out.

Our children need us. We, already stressed, may be feeling our own vicarious
trauma <https://psychcentral.com/health/vicarious-trauma#causes>, but there
are many great resources to help us help our kids in the wake of a school
shooting or threat of one.
<https://www.schoolcounselor.org/Publications-Research/Publications/Free-ASCA-Resources/After-a-School-Shooting#:~:text=Helping%20Students%20After%20a%20School%20Shooting%201%20Try,are%20people%20who%20do%20bad%20things.%20More%20items>
You may wish to learn more about vicarious trauma in schools
<https://learnsafe.com/mental-health-in-schools-coping-with-vicarious-trauma/>
so
that you can be aware of what to look out for in your children and in our
students (and in ourselves) as Thursday's events start to sink in and play
out. Remember, it is not uncommon for traumatic reactions to be belated and
to rise to the surface days or weeks after the traumatic event.

We are all dealing with so many collective traumas
<https://www.huffpost.com/entry/collective-trauma-at-work_l_62a37b3be4b0c77098a0309d>
right now. Perhaps the time is right to finally reach out for help.

Help is available for you and your family members. Some resources are
below, but you can also contact me for a confidential consultation,
assessment, or referral.

Thank you,

Kim McCoy Coleman

*Employee Assistance Program (EAP)*

The New York State Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a worksite-based
program designed to help state employees deal with the everyday issues
involved in balancing work and life, as well as more serious problems that
may impact work performance. This benefit is available to SUNY Plattsburgh
employees, retirees, and their families and is sponsored jointly by labor
and management.

*Wellness NYS: *New York State’s Office of Employee Relations makes a
variety of resources available on their website. This includes statewide
initiatives and resources. One such resource is the Wellness Everyday
initiative.

*Wellness Everyday: *This is a monthly challenge with a daily “to-do”
suggestion list of little steps to improve overall wellness at work and in
life.

*Webpage: *https://wellnys.oer.ny.gov/

*Healthcare and Mental Health Resources:*

Most of our employees at SUNY Plattsburgh have the *Empire Plan*, which
provides both in-person and Virtual Care options. Virtual Care offers
convenient, private, and cost-effective online visits with eligible
providers, including online mental health providers. Online teletherapy can
be cost effective, time efficient, and may reduce wait times that can occur
in the North Country when seeking in-person psychotherapy.

*Empire Plan*:

Empire BlueCross BlueShield: Hospitalization

United HealthCare: Major Medical

Beacon Health Options Inc.: Mental Health/Substance Abuse

CVS/Caremark, Inc.: Prescriptions

Most of our Employees here at SUNY Plattsburgh have the *Empire Plan*,
which provides both in-person and Virtual Care options. Virtual Care offers
convenient, private and cost-effective online visits with eligible
providers.

Employees can search the provider directory
<http://www.empireplanproviders.com/provider.htm> to find providers in the
area, as well as providers that offer the telehealth option.

*Telehealth Under the Empire Plan: *If you are enrolled in the Empire Plan,
this telemedicine program is provided by *LiveHealth Online*. Claims for
the telemedicine visits will be processed by Empire BlueCross, the Empire
Plan’s hospital carrier. Empire Plan enrollees/dependents who require
immediate access to medical or mental health telemedicine services can
visit Empire Blue Cross’s <https://www.empireblue.com/nys> website and
register through the LiveHealth Online link. To receive paid-in-full
benefits, the Empire Plan specific coupon code (listed on the Blue Cross
Empire Plan website) must be added when registering for medical
telemedicine services or when receiving *mental health telemedicine
services*. Currently, Empire Plan enrollees registering for LiveHealth
Online would use “Empire Blue Cross'' as the health plan and enter their
Empire Plan identification number. The Empire Plan specific coupon code
should be added on the screen which discusses payment (result will show a
$0 visit fee). After successfully registering and logging in, medical
services with a live physician can be requested.

Empire Plan enrollees are encouraged to call the Empire Plan with any
questions at 1-877-769-7447 (1-877-769-7447).

*See a doctor without leaving the house*

When you're sick or suffering from allergy symptoms, you probably don't
feel like making the trip to the doctor's office. And if the doctor's
office is closed, you might be out of luck — but not with 24/7 care on
LiveHealth Online.

Doctors are always standing by and ready to provide a diagnosis, treatment
plan, and prescriptions if necessary. You don't even have to leave your
couch or bed.
