"Transitional Justice for Ukraine"
As part of the challenges Ukraine will face rebuilding after the war will
be issues of transitional justice. Due to its incomplete transition to
democracy, the brutality of the Russian invasion, and the presence of a
large ethnic Russian population within Ukraine post-conflict demands for
justice are likely to be very strong and hard for the Ukrainian government
to meet. Dr. Murphy will discuss the nature of the transitional justice
demands facing a post-war Ukraine and the ways they may, or may not, be
satisfied.
Dr. Murphy is an Associate Professor of Political Science at SUNY Oneonta.
His research focuses on problems of regime change and post-conflict
stability, including "transitional justice" or dealing with the legacies of
an authoritarian or violent past. Ongoing research projects concern the
effects of transitional justice policies, such as criminal prosecution and
screening/lustration, on outcomes such as democracy, human rights, regime
consolidation, and political identity.
