Dear Campus Community:

SUNY Plattsburgh will soon be required to participate in the new SUNY
Managed Print Initiative
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/academics/resources/technology/policies/suny-managed-print.html>.
The goals are to cut costs and enhance environmental sustainability by
reducing printing across all SUNY institutions. SUNY aims to save $15 to
$20 million annually.

In essence, we have an urgent requirement to "print smart and print less" in
order to reduce printing costs, eliminate underutilized printing equipment,
and decrease our carbon footprint in accordance with SUNY stewardship and
sustainability goals.

*First Steps*
We will be reducing the number of printing devices on campus in phases,
beginning with locally connected (desktop) printers and some networked
laser printers. Most of the remaining laser printers will be eliminated
after the spring term.

Over the next two years the campus will switch to new printing software. We
will eliminate printing equipment and replace the remainder of our fleet
with new devices that are compatible with the SUNY Plan.

Technicians will reach out to all users in the phase-one group soon to
review needs, discuss alternatives, and remove equipment.

*Phase Two*
We will eventually work towards further consolidation and centralized
printer usage in each campus building, using secure multi-function devices
that can print, scan, fax, and email. When this phase occurs, a map of
printers will guide users to the print locations. Learn more about the plan
and view a timeline on our SUNY Managed Print Initiative

.

*What Can You Do? A lot!*
The SUNY initiative is a wonderful challenge for us to improve our carbon
footprint and express our values. Printing less saves trees, reduces energy
consumption, and even saves water (12 oz. per sheet of paper).

All of us can take steps to reduce our printing immediately. We can think
twice before we print and make the most of our technology by using online
collaboration tools and moving documents to shared platforms.

Stay tuned for updates on this important initiative. And, as always, feel
free to contact the ITS Helpdesk

any questions. Thank you.
