*Attention Academic Advisors: Introduction to the Math Corequisite Model
and Math Pathways at SUNY Plattsburgh *
It is no secret that many students struggle with meeting math competency
and or successfully completing general education mathematics. Sometimes
this is because of a lack of basic skills and or because they ended up in a
mathematics course that doesn't align with their career or personal
interests.
Nationally, evidence suggests that traditional remedial sequential
coursework, thought to address a lack of basic skills, is not the best
approach to achieve desired student success rates in mathematics courses.
A Corequisite Model, where the basics are simultaneously taught in a
supportive and correlated manner with the college level mathematics course,
has shown itself to promote a better success rate for students who appear
to need pre-college preparation. In Fall 2021, the Mathematics Department
will offer two corequisite models: one that offers experiences in
quantitative applications of mathematics (MAT106-107: CRN 8319-8320) and
one that satisfies a need for statistics (MAT 108-109: CRN 8513-8514).
Students are required to sign up for both the lower and higher numbered
course in each pair. Successful completion of either 107 or 109 satisfies
GE5 general education requirements as well as math competency. The courses
have also been submitted for review by the General Education Committee for
satisfaction of a required course in the Quantitative Reasoning category of
the CCC. For more information on the Corequisite Model, contact Anne Petro
or Rob Keever. Students, not including STEM and Business majors, who need
competency as well as general education satisfaction should seriously
consider enrolling in one of the two Corequisite course pairs. Master
Course Outlines are available for review.
To address appropriate selection of math courses so as to correlate the
interest of all students, the Department has created the Math Pathways
FlowChart
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rC35Vwta7vRacy-ipjeOy9m3QAYMSi-8/view?>.
Four pathways are shown in the Flowchart by generic major: STEM, Business,
Social Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. Note, the exact sequence of
mathematics courses for a specific major should be determined by discussion
with a student's advisor. The Department hopes that this chart can be used
to advise students into courses that more align with the students'
interests and major needs.
