Welcome to the October edition of Data Matters! This issue highlights fall
enrollment trends, upcoming events, and new ways we’re connecting data to
action to inform decision-making across campus.
Data Spotlight: Grow and Stabilize Enrollment
Our final fall enrollment is 4,561 students, a 0.5% increase from Fall
2024. This modest but meaningful increase reflects our ongoing progress
toward stabilizing enrollment. The chart below highlights enrollment by
student level over the duration of the Plattsburgh Next Strategic Plan
(2022-2025).

University Survey Support Endorsement Process
Students and employees can receive support in the development and
administration of surveys through University Survey Support (USS). To
submit a request for support, complete the Campus Survey Form
<https://plattsburgh.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/526/administration/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=5742>
or contact OIE at plattsburgh.edu. USS now offers survey endorsement. Endorsed
surveys signal campuswide confidence in the project’s design and plans for
analysis. To learn more, check out the summary of services available
through USS attached to this email.
Data Challenge and Last Month’s Results
Last month, we compared and contrasted the terms probability and
likelihood. In the context of improving retention, a few applications for
these concepts emerge. Analyzing the likelihood of attrition through data
such as withdrawal history, course loads, behavioral flags (e.g. attendance
or late assignments), and/or term schedules could allow us to model a
time-to-dropout/stopout (aka survival analysis). This would allow for more
effective early intervention. On the other hand, analyzing the probability
of persistence through data such as demographics, completion performance,
financial information, and/or campus engagement could allow us to identify
what works in certain areas to then apply in others. Such an approach may
better support those students just below the cusp of satisfactory academic
progress.
This month’s challenge: explore patterns in student demographics and
department choice. Look for shifts or outliers that could reveal emerging
trends. Consider the synthetic dataset here
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1n2dhZSS547cVihY32iq1ChWSNqlVo7vT/view?usp=drive_link>,
modeled after SUNY Plattsburgh enrollment which contains demographic
information for 5 consecutive fall semesters. Use Excel or Sheets to
visualize changes in distributions over time, or more advanced techniques
like machine learning
<https://www.datacamp.com/tutorial/k-means-clustering-python> or network
analysis
<https://cphss.wustl.edu/methodsandstrategies/social-network-analysis/network-analysis-101/>
to visualize student clusters. Bring your insights to OIE’s next coffee
hour or stay tuned for our thoughts in next month’s newsletter!
Thank you for engaging with Data Matters. We appreciate your partnership in
building a culture of curiosity and continuous improvement at SUNY
Plattsburgh. As always, our team welcomes your ideas, questions, and
collaboration.
