Dear SUNY Plattsburgh,
The jury’s decision to convict Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd
is a critical and long needed step in securing #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd.
Although I find hope in the verdict, I still feel that a guilty verdict
cannot change the fact that George Floyd — and Breonna Taylor, Daunte
Wright, Adam Toledo and too many others — should be alive today. However it
is a tiny step to address centuries of racial injustice and institutionally
sanctioned violence against Black and Brown bodies.
In collaboration with a number of campus community members, starting today,
and until next Tuesday April 27, we are providing various opportunities for
students, staff, and faculty to process thoughts and emotions that the
trial has brought up.
