[Important Information for Students] Racial Violence Solidarity Night for Daunte Wright Shooting

Dear Campus Community,

The fatal shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright this week in Brooklyn
Center, Minnesota is a senseless tragedy that defies acceptance. It tears
at our soul and amplifies the trauma and terror that so many in our
community are experiencing at this moment.

As details continue to be reported, we know this: A Black man has died as a
result of another senseless police shooting. This is horrifying and
devastating, most especially to our Black community members. I also
understand that the grief that is felt throughout this campus is also
experienced by non-Black People of Color.

Daunte Wright’s death, happening during the trial of Derek Chauvin for the
murder of George Floyd, is a painful reminder of systemic racism.

The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, members of the President's
Inclusive Excellence Council, and other community members who facilitated
dialogue spaces in the summer and fall have organized an online space on
Wednesday, April 14 for the Daunte Wright killing. It will be at 6 p.m. and

We do not know what the outcome of the Chauvin murder trial will be.
However, a cross-functional group is preparing to provide ways to process
and support our BIPOC community members and allies. We will be sharing
details soon for such opportunities on campus as the jury concludes its
deliberation in the coming days. This will include spaces for artistic
release, conversations in caucus groups, hybrid meeting places, walks,
journaling and more.

These are our next steps as we work to support those who face the heavy
impact of systemic racism. This is a journey of change we must walk
together to create a safe and welcoming community. That is my charge as
your president, and it is my focus in leading us forward.
