Dear Campus Community,

Today marks the beginning of Sexual Assault Awareness Month which is
highlighted by events
<https://docs.google.com/document/u/2/d/e/2PACX-1vQ84mqg268wIYr_3PcHLmvD1DaqnrwSdYZrlD7bYvUXQFRgO7IGEzLLprjhADiXCWenJ-Om_np89iaG/pub?urp=gmail_link&gxids=7757>
throughout the Plattsburgh community during the month of April. The theme
for the month of April 2021: The Time is Now: To Talk. To Act. To End
Sexual Violence.

Sexual violence is prevalent and pervasive to the college experience and
overall well-being of students, leaving long-term effects including but not
limited to sleep deprivation, anxiety, difficulty in class or at work,
alcohol and substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide
attempts.

During this month and beyond, we encourage you to get involved in awareness
and education. We hope that these initiatives will encourage
acknowledgement of how serious the issue of sexual and interpersonal
violence is for many on a daily basis.

One specific initiative the Title IX Office would like to highlight is our
Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign.

In an effort to raise awareness and work towards ending sexual violence, we
ask that you participate in our initiative by sharing why sexual assault
awareness is important to you OR the way in which you make a difference in
violence prevention. Please go to this link
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfdIOgvprY147xrYytOV0NLZ5rf6onu5WPzi4XrX74ne-OrNA/viewform>
to participate.

The campaign will be displayed throughout campus and on Instagram through
various platforms (@titleix.sunyplattsburgh, @sunyplattsburgh,
@h.u.b.__sunyplattsburgh, etc.).

While supporting someone who has experienced violence can be difficult,
individuals must be able to make personal decisions to disclose their
experience or seek support on their own terms. No one should be pressured
to make decisions before they are ready or judged for not speaking out. It
is important that we foster a community where each of our members works
toward the safety and support of others, and communicates clearly: You are
not alone. You will be supported. You Matter.

Reminder of Important College Policies

In an effort to enhance what we are doing to reduce barriers to reporting,
we have added an amnesty clause to our Social Distancing & Face Covering
Policy
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/offices-divisions/administration-finance/management-services/campus-handbook/section-viii-health-safety/social-distancing-face-covering.html>.
This change reads as follows:

“The health and safety of every student at the State University of New York
and its State-operated and community college is of utmost importance. A
student acting in good faith that discloses any incident of domestic
violence, dating violence, stalking, and/or sexual assault to SUNY
Plattsburgh officials or law enforcement will not be subject to SUNY
Plattsburgh Code of Conduct action for violations of Social Distancing &
Face Covering Policy occurring at or near the time of the commission of the
domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and/or sexual assault.”

As a reminder, we also have the Policy for Alcohol and/or Drug Use Amnesty
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/health-safety/title-ix/faq.html> in
cases of sexual and/or interpersonal violence. Please access resources and
reporting options
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/health-safety/title-ix/sexual-assault-interpersonal-violence.html>
available throughout our community.

Find important policy information here: SUNY Sexual Harassment & Sexual
Violence Policy.
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/offices-divisions/administration-finance/management-services/campus-handbook/section-ii-affirmative-action-equal-opportunity/sexual-violence-policy.html>

It is the policy of SUNY Plattsburgh that sexual violence will not be
tolerated. Further, it is the policy of the College to hold perpetrators
accountable for their actions, through campus judicial or personnel
procedures if appropriate, and by working with community agencies and law
enforcement as appropriate.

SUNY Plattsburgh complies with enforcement of all known valid court orders
of protection that are brought to the attention of SUNY Plattsburgh. SUNY
Plattsburgh shall comply with Federal and State Law when information is
requested by reporting individuals or law enforcement regarding an alleged
violation of an order of protection. Please notify University Police and/or
the Office of Human Resource Services of any orders of protection to which
you may need support with.
