Dear Campus Community,
Today marks Holocaust Remembrance Day, a time set aside around the world to
remember one of the most profound tragedies in human history and to honor
the lives of those who were lost.
This day invites us not only to remember, but to reflect on the importance
of truth, education, and our shared responsibility to learn from the past.
The Holocaust reminds us of what can happen when hatred, dehumanization,
and the erosion of democratic values go unchecked.
At SUNY Plattsburgh, we believe that education carries both knowledge and
moral purpose. Our classrooms, scholarship, and campus conversations exist
not only to study history, but to ensure that it is never forgotten,
distorted, or diminished. When we engage honestly with difficult chapters
of the past, we strengthen our ability to recognize injustice, challenge
prejudice, and affirm the dignity of every person.
Today, I encourage us all to take a moment to reflect, to learn, and to
honor the millions of people whose lives were lost during the Holocaust.
Whether through reading, conversation, or quiet personal reflection, these
acts of remembrance help keep their stories and humanity alive.
Below, you will find a message from SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr.
marking this important day across our university system.
Thank you for being part of a campus that values truth, compassion, and the
responsibility that comes with remembering.
Sincerely,
Dr. Alexander Enyedi
President

*Chancellor King and the SUNY Board of Trustees Statement on International
Holocaust Remembrance Day*
“The United Nations established International Holocaust Remembrance Day—on
the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Birkenau concentration
and extermination camp—as a somber opportunity to reflect on how we each
can do our part to uphold the pledge: Never Again.
“As the largest comprehensive system of public higher education in the
country, we recommit ourselves to making sure students learn the lessons of
the Holocaust, and the uncomfortable truths about times throughout history
when ignorance and prejudice led to dehumanization, oppression, and murder.
“We grieve for the six million Jews, and for all victims of the Holocaust,
who were murdered simply for seeking to live according to their faith and
customs. We pledge SUNY will always serve as a beacon of knowledge and an
institution that works tirelessly to ensure all students are welcomed and
appreciated.
“We must ensure that every generation is taught the lessons of the past and
not simply to tolerate different views and backgrounds, but to value them.
That’s the work of public higher education and work we do today and every
day at SUNY.”
