Data Matters: Monthly Updates from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Welcome to this month’s edition of Data Matters! We’re excited to share
insights and updates from our Student Success Dashboards, along with
upcoming events and new opportunities to engage with data on campus.
Got Data? Presentation - TODAY Mar. 24 at 1 p.m.
Our next Got Data? presentation features Todd Moravec from Student
Financial Services on Monday, Mar. 24 at 1 p.m. in the Alumni Conference
Room. Todd will share information about the Cardinal Grants initiative and
its outcomes. Light refreshments will be served. If you are interested in
presenting at a future Got Data? event, contact us at OIE at plattsburgh.edu.
Data Spotlight
This month’s data spotlight features information about student success and
equity from our Student Success Dashboard
<https://plattsburgh.successdashboard.org/>. Exploring the “In Which
Courses Do They Struggle
<https://plattsburgh.successdashboard.org/faculty-dashboard/where-do-they-struggle>”
page of the Faculty Dashboard, you can notice that a course with high DEW
rates over the previous three fall semesters, CFS 1889, now has a DEW rate
lower than 15%. Navigating next to the “Which Courses Have the Largest GPA
Equity Gaps
<https://plattsburgh.successdashboard.org/faculty-dashboard/achievement-gaps-gpa>”
page and filtering for the top 10 “Largest GPA Gap AND High Enrollment
courses” you will notice that large equity gaps exist when filtering for
“Pell”, “First-Generation”, and “URP” groups. This means that, although we
are noticing greater student success in this pivotal introductory course,
Pell eligible students, male students, and URP students are less likely to
succeed in this course than their counterparts.
Thanks to these data and the information they provide, a number of
individuals and groups on campus, including the Success Analytics Working
Group, are actively working to investigate this issue in order to find
solutions to benefit students.
Assessment Workshops
OIE is partnering with the Provost’s Office to provide upcoming learning
opportunities about assessment. See below for dates, times, and topics and
let us know if you are interested in other opportunities to learn more
about assessment. If you are interested in attending, contact Kylie King (
good2118 at plattsburgh.edu).

Spring 2025 Census Update
Our preliminary enrollment and retention figures based on our Spring 2025
census are promising. Considering enrollment, we are noticing a 2.8%
year-over-year total enrollment increase from Spring 2024 and a strong,
20%, increase in graduate enrollment. Fall-to-Spring retention is at a five
year high with overall undergraduate matriculated student retention at
93.3%, first-time, first-year student retention at 90.6%, and transfer
student retention at 91.6%. We are hopeful that these positive trends will
continue into the next academic year, as we continue to work hard to
support our students.
Visit us in Kehoe!
OIE will be hosting another collaborative coffee hour on Apr. 7 from 11
a.m. - 12 p.m. As you prepare for upcoming annual reporting, feel free to
join us to discuss your ideas for the upcoming year as they relate to
evaluating new initiatives, revising old ones, or to ideate on what effects
might be anticipated given changes to the higher education landscape. For
example, a declining birth rate is often cited as a reason for declining
enrollment, but that doesn’t stand up to statistical scrutiny. Instead,
economic factors (e.g. inflation rates, unemployment rates) are much better
predictors of future enrollment. Join us for coffee, snacks, and discussion!
New Student Success Dashboards
The following Faculty dashboards have been refreshed with data for either
academic year 2023-2024 (annual aggregation) or Fall 2024 (semester
aggregation):
-
Who Are My Students
-
What Paths Do They Follow
-
In Which Courses Do They Struggle
-
Which Courses Have The Largest Equity Gaps (soon!)
-
What Are Their Academic Outcomes
The tabs “Chart FAQ”, “Applying These Data”, and “Definitions” explain the
logic behind the decisions for inclusion/exclusion, means of aggregation,
and offer contextual ideas for consuming the information. If you have any
questions, feel free to reach out to us at OIE at plattsburgh.edu–or stop by
during our coffee hour!
Data Challenge
New this month, OIE is introducing a data challenge. Each month, you will
be presented with a scenario and access to related data, and you will have
the freedom to use whichever tool or platform you are comfortable with to
generate an insight or tell a story. We would love to hear from you - your
work may help inform future efforts! Your visualization, KPI, or story
might even be featured in the following month’s newsletter.
*March 2025 Scenario: *Consider this infographic
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RPg03na3e6rE3goHXdADupo5WgqhwP9v/view?usp=drive_link>
from Statista. It depicts job market data in the travel & tourism industry
from 2019-2024, and forecasts an increase by 2034. Now consider this data
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PDR-be6w6xjsgllhByMHb93WXagtTIw0/edit?usp=drive_link&ouid=102440456875934130971&rtpof=true&sd=true>
from SUNY Plattsburgh. It contains the number of students applying to,
enrolling at, and earning degrees according to each division and academic
department for the same time period as the infographic. Your task is to
seek out trends that could inform planning at SUNY Plattsburgh. One
question, for example, might be whether student application or enrollment
in majors related to travel and tourism follow the trends of the industry?
There are many angles to analyze, choose what resonates with you. If you’re
interested in participating but aren’t sure where to start, please contact
Levi Martinez (Lmart008 at plattsburgh.edu).
We look forward to seeing you at upcoming events and hearing your
perspectives in our new Data Challenge. As always, feel free to reach out
or stop by during our coffee hour—we’d love to connect!
