IMPORTANT HEALTH ALERT: Rise in Norovirus Cases on Campus
At the Student Health and Counseling Center, your health and wellbeing are
our top priority. We are currently seeing an increase in norovirus cases on
campus, and we need your help to prevent further spread.
What is Norovirus?
Norovirus is highly contagious and spreads quickly through close contact,
contaminated surfaces, and food. It causes vomiting, diarrhea, stomach
pain, and nausea. You may know it as the "stomach bug" or "stomach flu"
(though it is not related to the flu).
How to Protect Yourself and Others:
-
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using the
toilet. Alcohol based hand sanitizer is not enough.
-
Wash your hands before eating or preparing food.
-
Wash your hands after touching contaminated surfaces.
-
Staying away from people who are sick.
Clean and disinfect:
-
Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces with a bleach-based cleaner or
other disinfectant. Make sure your disinfectant clearly states that it
kills norovirus.
-
Wash laundry in hot water.
-
Wash clothes and linens separately.
-
Remove any vomit or feces before washing items.
-
Dry items using the highest heat setting on your dryer.
Avoid spreading the virus through food:
-
Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly
-
Throw away food that might contain norovirus
*What Are the Symptoms?*
Symptoms usually appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and last 1 to 3 days.
Most cases are mild.
How to Feel Better:
-
Hydrate with water, electrolyte drinks, or clear broth.
-
Rest as much as possible.
-
Stick to bland foods like rice, toast, bananas, and applesauce.
-
*Avoid* caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and dairy.
Over-the-counter medications like Imodium (for diarrhea) or Dramamine (for
nausea) may help—check with a healthcare provider first.
Emergency medical attention may be required if:
[image: ⚠️] Show signs of severe dehydration (dark urine, very little
urine, dizziness).
[image: ⚠️] Have a fever over 101°F.
[image: ⚠️] See blood in your vomit or stool.
[image: ⚠️] Have intense or worsening stomach pain.
[image: ⚠️] Experience a severe headache.
[image: ⚠️] Cannot keep down fluids for more than 12 hours.
Stopping the spread starts with you. Please take these precautions
seriously to protect yourself and our campus community.
