Data Matters: Monthly Updates from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Welcome to the April edition of Data Matters! As we look toward the end of
the academic year, we’re highlighting a range of initiatives that connect
our campus to the wider community and support SUNY Plattsburgh’s strategic
goals. From collaborative research to new programming and campus-wide
conversations, there's a lot happening—and we’re excited to share updates,
opportunities, and ideas for what’s ahead.
Data Spotlight: Engage the North Country Region
Supporting the Plattsburgh Next strategic plan, SUNY Plattsburgh supports
many research and outreach initiatives that deepen engagement with the
North Country region—ranging from health and well-being to environmental
stewardship, business development, education, and community relations.
These efforts reflect the college’s commitment to regional impact through
collaboration, innovation, and community-centered research.
Got Data? Presentation - Thursday, May 15 at 11 a.m.
Our next Got Data? presentation will feature ACE Program Director Sara
Munson. Sara will share information about the impact of the ACE Program and
evaluate various program interventions. The event will be held on Thursday,
May 15 from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. in the Alumni Conference Room of the ACC.
Light refreshments will be served. If you are interested in presenting at a
future Got Data? event, contact us at OIE at plattsburgh.edu.
Student Perceptions of Plattsburgh Next
OIE and Public Relations intern Maggie Goff recently conducted a survey of
student awareness and opinion related to Plattsburgh Next. When asked if
they were aware of Plattsburgh Next, 85.5% of student respondents indicated
they were not. Students were then asked if they had heard of any of the
pillars that make up the plan, 30.1% said they had heard of at least one of
the pillars. When asked about the importance of these pillars to them as a
student, most responded that they were neutral. The only pillar about which
more students indicated importance rather than neutrality was the
Strengthening Student Success. To check out a student spotlight related to
this pillar, see the attachment to this email.
Coffee Hour
OIE will be hosting another collaborative coffee hour on May 5th from 11
a.m. to 12 p.m. Feel free to join us to discuss your ideas for the upcoming
year as they relate to evaluating new initiatives, revisiting old ones, or
to ideate on what effects might be anticipated given the changes to the
higher education landscape. Our thanks to those that joined us last month
for the coffee, snacks, and conversation!
Coming Fall 2025: Data Influencer Program
Are you interested in using data more effectively to support student
success and drive informed decisions? This fall, the Office of
Institutional Effectiveness will launch a new Data Influencer Certificate
Program for a limited number of campus participants. Those enrolled will
explore practical, campus-specific topics like reporting tools, student
success prediction, data visualization, and ethical data use—building
skills to ask better questions and communicate insights with confidence.
Those who complete four sessions will be recognized as Data Influencers at
a special event with President Enyedi. Contact us at OIE at plattsburgh.edu
for more information or to collaborate on this idea—and keep your eyes
peeled for more details soon!
Data Challenge
New month, new curiosity. Students from all walks of life and backgrounds
experience hardship at some point in their college careers, the degree to
which ranges from momentarily inconvenient to trajectory altering. For a
variety of reasons, students choose to withdraw from college and this month
we’re going to explore that a little bit. Consider this synthetic data
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UdMB1JqFY6J4q9fUSKhXwSLZQd0OlV3V/view?usp=sharing>,
generated from real SUNY Plattsburgh data. Are there any trends that you
find interesting? Maybe it confirms a suspicion or contradicts an intuition.
Feel free to use whichever tool or platform you are comfortable with. We
would love to hear from each of you participating as your work may help
inform future organizational analysis! Your visualization, KPI, or story
could even be featured in the following month’s newsletter. If you’re
interested in participating but aren’t sure where to start, please contact
Levi Martinez (Lmart008 at plattsburgh.edu).
As we continue to align our work with strategic priorities, we’re inspired
by the many ways our campus connects with and contributes to the broader
North Country community. Whether you're running a research project,
advising students, or curious about what’s happening across campus, your
role matters—and we’re here to support that work through thoughtful data,
shared learning, and collaborative exploration.
Best regards,
The Office of Institutional Effectiveness
