Campus Building Cooling Systems
The increased temperatures inside our campus buildings have brought along
some concerns with the cooling systems around campus, and our department
would like to provide further information to help our community understand
the process.
First and foremost, the Central Heating Plant has been and will continue to
work on getting each system up and running.
A few key components:
-
The Central Heating Plant has shut down the High Temp Hot Water systems
which means there is currently no heating system functioning. People may
still feel warm air coming from the HVAC system, however this is part of
the air handling systems using a combination of recirculated building air
and outside air for ventilation requirements.
-
Bringing up the cooling systems requires a process that includes
preparing individual buildings cooling systems, cleaning and sanitizing
cooling towers, and sending out water samples for health and safety
protocols. These are regulated practices that are put in place and must be
followed before the systems can run.
-
The outside air temperatures must be consistently above a certain
temperature prior to initiating the process, otherwise problems with the
chiller and refrigerant will arise. Even at a temperature of 60 degrees the
process to slowly warm up the oil is time consuming.
-
We did not consistently hit over 50 degrees overnight until May 14th.
Unfortunately, the weather added stressors as it jumped drastically in a
week's time versus a gradual incline in temperatures.
Here are the most up to date status of our campus cooling systems:
-
Hawkins: Air Cooled Chiller – Waiting on equipment vendor for
replacement of failed sensors.
-
Kehoe, Yokum, Myers: Water Cooled Chiller (Located in Yokum) - Sent out
for testing with a minimum of a 10 day wait.
-
Memorial, Saranac, Hudson/Hudson Annex: Air Cooled Chiller - Enabled
-
Sibley Hall: Air Cooled Chiller - Currently working on enabling.
-
Clinton Dining, Beaumont, Feinberg Library, AuSable Hall: Water Cooled
Chiller - Sent out for testing with a minimum of a 10 day wait.
-
Angell College Center: Water Cooled Chiller - This tower took extra time
for sanitization and is anticipated to be about a week and half behind the
rest of the water cooled systems.
Thank you for your continued patience as we get our campus cooling systems
up and running. The health and safety of our campus has been and will
continue to be our priority as we complete the required testing of our
systems.
Thank you,
