Dear Members of Our Campus Community,

It is with sadness that we share with you the March 11, 2024 passing of
Martin Mannix, a member of the Class of 1964, first Student Association
president, member of the University Council, and much more. He was 82.

Mr. Mannix was as much a fixture in the North Country community as he was
on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. He grew up on South Catherine Street with
his six siblings in the City of Plattsburgh. Marty, as most knew him,
earned his degree in teaching at Plattsburgh and taught for a brief time
out of college but then found a career in insurance.

After working two years in insuring in Burlington, Vt., he accepted a
position in 1968 with Northern Insuring Agency in Plattsburgh, rising
through the company to the position of vice president. He retired from
Northern in 2004.

As a SUNY Plattsburgh student, Marty was approached by then-President
George Angell, who told him he had the power to exact change in what was
called the House of Delegates. He and his friends came up with a plan and
presented the idea to the administration and student body. The changes were
put to a vote and passed overwhelmingly. Elections were held, and Marty
took charge of the first SA as its president.

A dedicated public servant, Marty was an elected official in the Town of
Plattsburgh for more than 30 years — first as a member of the Town of
Plattsburgh Town Board, as its deputy supervisor and then as town justice.
A lifelong Democrat, he served as delegate to the 1972 national Democratic
convention and was chair of the Clinton County Democratic party for eight
years. He was long involved in the Lions Club, Plattsburgh Rotary Club,
Plattsburgh Kiwanis Club, and school board member for St. John's Academy,
his own elementary- and high-school alma mater. His service commitment
included his charitable work in Nicaragua with the Mission of Hope.

Marty was appointed to the University Council by then-Gov. David Patterson
in 2008 and was re-appointed in 2016 by then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo. In 2011, he
was designated as chair of the council.

Calling hours will be held Friday, April 19 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and
Saturday, April 20 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad
St., Plattsburgh. A memorial service will follow in the Brown Funeral Home
Chapel.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown, 518-561-3980,

Be well and please stay safe,
