Dear Campus Community Members,
We are saddened to learn of the Dec. 5, 2024 passing of Evelyne Skopp,
former longtime assistant registrar and wife of the late Distinguished
Teaching Professor of History Emeritus Douglas Skopp. She was 85.
Mrs. Skopp began her tenure as a tech assistant for social science in May
1973. In December 1974, she became a clerk in the Office of the Registrar,
a position she held until her promotion to tech assistant in that office in
1975, a position she held until March 1985. In January of 1985, Mrs. Skopp
was named acting assistant registrar until being named assistant college
registrar April 1, 1986, a position she held until her retirement Dec. 31,
2000.
Along with husband Dr. Skopp, the couple were longtime supporters of the
university. As a result of his research on issues related to the Holocaust,
the Douglas and Evelyne Skopp Holocaust Memorial Gallery was created in
Feinberg Library in the fall of 2012, ensuring that the Holocaust will
never be forgotten at SUNY Plattsburgh. The gallery and its naming was the
result of efforts by alumni and friends of the university, who have given
more than $25,000 to put in place the Douglas R. Skopp Endowment for the
History Department and to fund the Skopp Competition on the Theme of the
Holocaust, an annual contest that challenges students in all disciplines to
submit original works that commemorate the tragedy.
But independently of her husband, Mrs. Skopp was lauded for her work in the
Office of the Registrar. After a 30-year career, she returned to volunteer
there.
There will be no calling hours or funeral service. An informal gathering
will be held at the house of longtime friend to the Skopps, Colleen Lemza,
professor of public relations and chair of the Department of Journalism and
Public Relations, Saturday, Dec. 21 at noon, 18 Coastland Dr. in Valcour.
For information, email colleen.lemza at plattsburgh.edu.
Our condolences to all who knew and loved her.
Be well and stay safe,
Gerianne
