[Important Information for Employees] Bias Incident and Ongoing Investigation

Dear Campus Community,

We are writing with an update on the investigation of an anonymous email
sent to our Interim Director of Undergraduate Admissions. The sender of the
email alleged they had witnessed hate speech committed against the Interim
Director, who is a BIPOC employee.

At the time of our November 17 email informing campus about this incident,
the identity of the sender was untraceable despite the collective efforts
of Information Technology Services, University Police, and Human Resource
Services to track down the IP address. As of today, the email is still
untraceable.

The open forum held in the Warren Ballroom on November 18 encouraged people
to share whatever they thought might be useful. Following that forum,
numerous people did reach out to Human Resource Services.

Please know this investigation remains open, is ongoing, and is a priority.
Human Resource Services will continue to interview people this week and we
are hopeful that these additional conversations will help. We continue to
encourage everyone to reach out to Michelle Trombley in Human Resource
Services at mboye001 at plattsburgh.edu with any information you may have.

While this situation has impacted all of campus, it has been particularly
painful and traumatizing for the employee who received the email, and for
all our BIPOC employees and students. We recognize and reaffirm that hate
speech is violence. It goes against the most central part of our mission to
“maintain a nurturing, accessible campus climate” that honors and
celebrates our diverse community. Hate speech is not, nor will it ever be
tolerated on our campus. We must continue to work together to share what we
know, challenge all acts of racism and abuse, and ensure that we impose
accountability on anyone involved in this incident to the fullest extent
possible.
