[Important Information for Employees] The Death of Leith Bardon

Dear Members of our Campus Community,

We are so saddened to have learned that longtime pioneer in Cardinal
women’s sports, Leith Bardon, passed away at her Plattsburgh home Tuesday,
April 12. She was 79.

Ms. Bardon joined the SUNY Plattsburgh community faculty as an instructor
in physical education in September 1970. Prior to that, according to her
obituary, she served as coach of women’s field hockey, one of the college’s
first women’s sports teams. In 1974, she was promoted to assistant
professor in physical education and associate professor in 1988. She served
as chair of the department in 1994.

Ms. Bardon organized and directed intramurals on campus, advised the
college’s rugby team and served as a longtime official for swim meets
around the region long after retirement from SUNY Plattsburgh. During her
tenure at the college, she was instrumental in the formation of the
college’s Fitness and Wellness Leadership major, which was launched in
2007. As senior faculty member, she was often called on to carry the
college’s mace during commencement ceremonies. She would often forgo the
ceremonial white gloves and opt instead to wear her golf gloves because she
said they gripped its well-polished wood better.

Ms. Bardon officially retired in 2013 but long remained a supporter of the
college and of Cardinal sports.

Calling hours will be Friday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brown
Funeral Home,, followed by graveside services at St. Peter’s Cemetery,
South Catherine Street, Plattsburgh. Arrangements are entrusted to Brown
