Dear Campus Community,
I am writing to share that Dr. Michelle Cromwell, our vice president for
diversity, equity and inclusion, will be leaving our campus to begin
serving as the inaugural vice president of inclusive excellence and
belonging at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health
Sciences in Tempe, Ariz. Their last day on campus will be Friday, Dec. 17.
Dr. Cromwell's leadership has been visible and active, showing us ways to
push forward this work together in times of advance planning and in times
of processing and change as we are facing now.
Since arriving on campus in July 2019 as our first vice-presidential-level
leader in areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dr. Cromwell has
invested deeply in our campus and the external community. Their work will
continue through the full fall semester.
Our commitment to and investment in this work will continue to expand. We
will soon launch a national search for the vice president / chief diversity
officer position. We will name interim leadership as we move to the next
stage and fill other open positions within the diversity equity and
inclusion division.
Their work led to us being designated by the Association of American
Colleges and Universities as a Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation
campus center, a program that will continue and will include hiring an
executive director to lead this specific work, which includes a pledge of
support from the SUNY system. With the assistance of the Plattsburgh
College Foundation, we are also adding a new staff person to focus on
retaining and successfully graduating Black, Indigenous and People of Color
(BIPOC) students who are not affiliated with existing campus student
support programs.
In sharing their new opportunity with me, Dr. Cromwell wrote: "Working with
the SUNY Plattsburgh community over the past two years has been a great
blessing and privilege. I feel humbled and awed to have journeyed with the
institution thus far. Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for having
had the opportunity to serve and partner with so many extraordinary staff,
faculty, students, administrators, and external community members."
Please join me in extending best regards to Dr. Cromwell for their
leadership on campus and in their new opportunity.
Alexander Enyedi
President
