With the number of positive COVID-19 cases on campus increasing, we are
seeing more questions and confusion around the proper protocol when a
student employee tests positive. Please see the facts below and continue
reading for additional information.
JUST THE FACTS
-Student employees must attend weekly pooled surveillance testing.
-Student employees must complete daily health screening
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/health-screening-covid-19>.
-Student employees must forward the daily health screening
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/health-screening-covid-19> email (with the
green check mark) to their supervisor prior to entering their workspace.
-The campus is deep-cleaned nightly but red buckets of cleaning supplies
are located throughout each building.
-The Student Health Center notifies students who test positive as part of
the pooled testing.
-The Health Department conducts contact tracing and issues quarantine
orders.
WHAT TO DO (As the Supervisor of a Student)
-Require that any student reporting to campus forward a copy of the daily
screening <https://www.plattsburgh.edu/health-screening-covid-19>
confirmation email that they can report to work. This should be sent every
day that they are reporting to work, before they report for work.
-Remind your student workers to attend weekly pooled surveillance testing.
-If your student employee notifies you that they have tested positive for
COVID-19, remain calm and contact Human Resource Services at
hrs at plattsburgh.edu. Please include the spaces the student worker has been
in and the last date they were at work. If we are all following the Social
Distancing and Face Covering Policy and washing our hands prior to touching
our face, the risk of exposure is relatively low. The Health Department
will do all of the required contract tracing. There are red buckets of
cleaning supplies throughout the campus. You can disinfect the surfaces of
areas the student was recently in contact with (but do not spray directly
on electronics).
TESTING/NOTIFICATION
All employees (faculty/staff/students) working on campus are required to
participate in weekly pooled surveillance testing. When a positive pool is
identified, the Student Health Center will notify everyone within that pool
to quarantine until the reflex test is complete (usually ~24 hours). The
reflex test is when they test each individual sample, which will determine
who the positive person is within that pool.
The Student Health Center will notify the Health Department of all positive
results. The Health Department conducts contact tracing and issues orders
of quarantine as appropriate. Walking by or speaking briefly with someone
who later tests positive, does not mean you meet the definition of “close
contact” or that quarantine is required.
We have witnessed the success of our Social Distancing and Face Covering
Policy
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/offices-divisions/administration-finance/management-services/campus-handbook/section-viii-health-safety/social-distancing-face-covering.html>
several times throughout the fall semester when a positive case in a
classroom did not spread to any classmates.
