Dear Campus Community,
I am excited to share with you that work will begin next week to transform
the north courtyard of Hawkins Hall into a meditation garden honoring past
SUNY Plattsburgh president and first lady, Dr. John Ettling and Lisa Lewis.
Leading up to Dr. Ettling’s retirement in June 2019, the Plattsburgh
College Foundation secured charitable gifts to establish the Lisa Lewis and
John Ettling Garden. Construction work that was to follow paused last year
due state limitations on construction amid the pandemic.
We are now able to bring this tribute to fruition, creating a beautiful,
restorative space for meditation and peaceful reflection. The garden will
be a place free from technology and conversation, so students, faculty,
staff and visitors may enjoy respite from the demands of their studies and
life in general.
As work begins Monday, Aug. 2 and proceeds through September, there will be
some disruptions in and around Hawkins Hall. Parking in the faculty/staff
lot adjacent to Hawkins will be more limited while construction of the
garden is underway, and some uses of the building will be restricted at
certain times. These details will be shared more soon.
We apologize for any inconvenience and greatly appreciate your patience
during this period.
A dedication of the space is planned for 2022, once the garden’s trees and
other plantings have matured. We look forward to also sharing details of
that event with you in the future.
Alexander Enyedi
President
