Dear Campus Community,
Early this morning, as I watched the U.S. Congress finish the certification
of the 2020 presidential election, the events of the preceding hours
lingered and weighed heavy on my heart. The images and actions we all
witnessed in Washington, D.C. were troubling, horrific and traumatizing.
The storming of the Capitol was a shocking affront to the democratic
principles this nation represents. The tame treatment of these domestic
terrorists versus the heavy-handedness applied to recent gatherings of
people of color in the same city was disgraceful.
As a community and as a nation, we should be clear about our expectations
and our demands. Such behavior in response to our democratic processes must
be wholeheartedly condemned.
I unequivocally do so here.
I wrote in November that this past Election Day would last a week or
perhaps months and would be difficult, but it would eventually conclude and
we would move forward together.
Now it has, and we will.
Although yesterday's chaos has seemingly been replaced by calm this
morning, we must not be complacent or fooled to think the worst is behind
us. Our collective call is to build a more perfect union.
That work must now occur earnestly nationally and locally. At SUNY
Plattsburgh, we will continue and increasingly support those who are
marginalized as we are student-focused, equity-minded and trauma-informed.
Dr. Alexander Enyedi
President
