Dear Campus Community,

As we near the November election, it is important that we create spaces for
all community members to engage in conversations that matter to us all,
regardless of our viewpoint.

The *Diversity Equity and Inclusion*
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/diversity/index.html> division has
developed a student-centered initiative called B.R.A.V.E. This stands for
Brave, Resilient, Amplified Voices for Equity-mindedness.

As a part of this initiative, the *President's Inclusive Excellence Council
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/president-leadership/inclusive-excellence-council.html>,*
in
collaboration with staff, faculty and students, is starting a B.R.A.V.E.
Space: Free Speech and Responsibility Conversations series. This will occur
twice a month and run from October 7, 2020 to March 3, 2021 and go from
noon to 1:30 p.m.

The topic for October 7 is "Why Vote?" The *Institute for Ethics in Public
Life*
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/centers/ethics-in-public-life/index.html> is
partnering with the initial session. The link to attend is here:
<https://plattsburgh.zoom.us/j/99072870225>.

The full series will offer opportunities for the entire campus community to
listen, learn, share ideas, and move forward together. This B.R.A.V.E.
Space creates opportunities to:

   - Explain why it is important to vote in a democratic society
   - Explore how to address getting your ballot and early voting
   - Examine how oppression can be woven into the voting process
   - Address audience questions about general voting

Brave spaces require we bring an open mind and stamina to tolerate
positions and perspectives that we might even hate. Brave Spaces require
the courage to question the unquestionable and discuss the undiscussable to
move to a place where the quietest voices are amplified.

I appreciate the leadership of Vice President for Diversity, Equity and
Inclusion Dr. Michelle Cromwell, members of the President’s Inclusive
Excellence Council, and others who have advanced this upcoming nine-part
series. I encourage you to participate.

Dr. Alexander Enyedi
President
