Dear Campus Community,
I am writing today to honor a group of SUNY Plattsburgh employees that are
vital to the functioning of our campus, and our service to students,
faculty and staff.
Today is National Custodial Workers Recognition Day – a day created to
celebrate and appreciate those who keep the places where we work, learn and
live running smoothly.
Perhaps in no other year has this been a more worthy time to share our best
thoughts and extend a heartfelt thank you.
Health and safety has been at the center of campus operations for much of
this year. In restarting for the fall semester, safety was integral to
everything we did and all we continue to do in serving students and the
life-changing work of SUNY Plattsburgh.
We simply wouldn't be here if we could not open safely. And we could not
open safely without our cleaning and janitorial staff.
A total of 83 colleagues serve on campus as cleaners, janitors and in
supervisory roles. Cleaners work independently or as part of a team doing
everything from polishing floors and window washing to vacuuming, trash and
recycling removal. They are in kitchens, common areas, labs and restrooms.
Janitors do similar work with added responsibilities that involve
responding to building issues, submitting work orders for repairs and
restocking cleaning supplies. Supervisors of both groups ensure the
responsibilities are carried out and directed well.
None of us -- no student, professor or professional -- could do our work,
complete our studies, or engage in our research without them. They are
indispensable.
To the cleaners, janitors and supervisors: I thank you for your service and
dedication to this college on behalf of each of us.
I encourage everyone on campus to do the same. Together, let's wish these
important colleagues a Happy National Custodial Workers Recognition Day.
Sincerely,
Dr. Alexander Enyedi
President
