Colleagues,
As I shared at Senate, I've been working with Christy Mink, Assistant
Director of Counseling, to provide some information sessions on the current
information on student mental health and how those who are working with
students can best support our students. My outreach to Christy came
directly from faculty feedback at our May 2022 Academic Affairs retreat.
I hope that these sessions are of some help, and that you can make time to
attend, if possible.
The first two sessions on "Supporting Student Mental Health" will be on
9/28 at 12PM (Cardinal Lounge) and 10/5 at 12PM (Alumni Conference Room).
Christy shares:
Nearly 8 out of 10 higher education faculty members will have a 1:1
conversation with a student about mental health this year.
This training will help faculty members prepare for these situations in
order to:
1. Know what to look for
2. Know what to say
3. Know how to connect students to resources
3. Know how to create inclusive spaces for students with mental health
issues
A final session, "Student Mental Health Q&A with a Counselor" is planned
for 11/16 at 12PM (Cardinal Lounge). This session is planned as an Open
Forum to ask questions, discuss concerns, and ask for consultation with a
counselor regarding student mental health concerns.
