[Academic-Affairs] Update on Faculty Questions for Fall 2021 and COVID

Colleagues,

I hope you are settling into a good sense of how you want your classes to
progress this semester, after we have now moved several weeks beyond the
start of Fall 2021.

*Question:*

I received a notification from the Student Affairs that one of my students
would not be attending class until further notice.  The student then came
to class the following day.  This is concerning to me, as I wonder if the
student has tested positive, yet is still in class.

*Answer:*

The standard notifications that come out from Student Affairs come out for
many reasons, so we cannot assume that receiving such a notice means that
it is COVID related.  These notices are sent for death in the family, many
different kinds of illness, or perhaps a concussion diagnosed on an athlete.

In terms of notifications that are sent because a particular student has
tested positive, the student will not be coming to class.  They will be
required to isolate, whether or not they are vaccinated.

The Clinton County Health Department is conducting all contact tracing.  A
notice may come out from Student Affairs *before* the contact tracing is
completed.  In such an instance, the student has been exposed, but it is
not immediately clear what the risk level is.  The contact tracers might
ultimately determine that there is no quarantine required, and in this
case, the student will be told that they can return to class.

I hope this information helps with confusion around notifications to
faculty.
