Hello,
The course syllabus is important for conveying course expectations to
students. The syllabus should welcome students into the course and set the
stage for an inclusive classroom environment, as well as be consistent with
the New York State Department of Education Expectations for Curriculum
<https://www.nysed.gov/college-university-evaluation/department-expectations-curriculum>
(lists elements that should be included in a syllabus). Below are a few
things to consider as you finalize your syllabus - Thank you in advance for
reading to the end, as there is a lot of information here!
Per the Course Syllabus Policy
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/offices-divisions/academic-affairs/provost/policies-and-procedures/syllabirequirements.html>,
the syllabus should be provided to students within one week of the start of
class. An accessible syllabus should be available on each lecture course’s
Brightspace site, in accordance with our Learning Management System Usage
Policy
<https://catalog.plattsburgh.edu/content.php?catoid=18&navoid=3468#learning-management-system-usage-policy>.
The syllabus should include,at minimum, the following:
-
Contact Information and Office Hours: Plan for at least one hour of
availability each week for each class per our recently passed Office
Hours Policy
<https://catalog.plattsburgh.edu/content.php?catoid=18&navoid=3468#office-hours-policy>.
For most full-time faculty, this is 3 hours per week. If a course is
online, virtual office hours should be available. Using Cardinal Star
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T8s_Y1AGG5bF7M2fTkni7vZACB_uIEQoo5IAtqAUJo4/edit?usp=drive_link>
to manage student appointments is a service that benefits our students.
-
Course Requirements and Policies: Clearly communicate assignments and
due dates. Require an assignment early and give students meaningful
feedback to help them thrive. This will allow you to assign an accurate
mid-term grade to nudge students into action and give advisors information
needed for guidance.
-
Course Outcomes: Review the course’s Model Course Outline (MCO) and
design your course accordingly. If the MCO on file in the Course and
Program Outlines

folder needs updating, bring this up with your department chair.
-
University Honor Code Statement: “It is expected that all students
enrolled in this class support the letter and the spirit of the Academic
Honesty Policy as stated in the Academic Catalog”
-
Student Accommodations Statement: “SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to
providing reasonable accommodations for all persons with disabilities. If
you are a student with a disability that may have an impact on your work in
this class and require academic or other accommodations, please
contact the Accessibility
Resources Office (ARO)
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/student-support/accessibility-services/index.html>
on the first floor of Feinberg Library 127, call 518-564-3844 or email
ARO at plattsburgh.edu. You may also Request Accommodations
<https://plattsburgh-accommodate.symplicity.com/> from the Accommodate
portal and a representative will contact you directly. To utilize specific
accommodations you must certify with this office prior to accommodations
being provided.” Make an Accessibility Resources Office Referral in

In addition to what is required by our current policy, here are a few other
items that can be reflected in the syllabus:
-
Basic Needs Statement: The SUNY Chancellor, Dr. John King has
prioritized meeting students’ basic needs. Here are some resources to help
you develop Basic Needs Syllabus Statements

Refer students to our Cardinal Cupboard
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/student-support/cardinal-cupboard.html>
webpage and make a Community Resources Referral in Cardinal Star

.
-
Title IX Statement: From Kim Irland, the Title IX Coordinator, “SUNY
Plattsburgh is committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment
for all students and employees. All employees, including faculty, have the
responsibility to notify the Title IX Coordinator when they have
information about conduct that may reasonably constitute sex discrimination
under Title IX. Students may also contact the Title IX Coordinator directly
to make a complaint of sex discrimination. Contact Kim Irland at
Title.IX at plattsburgh.edu, or visit 204 Angell College Center, or call
518-564-3281. Visit Title IX
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/health-safety/title-ix/index.html>
online for more information.”
-
Diversity Equity and Inclusion Statement: Let students know the
importance of safety and inclusivity in the classroom.
-
Interfaith and Religious Holiday Statement: Refer to our policy on Absence
due to Religious Beliefs
<https://catalog.plattsburgh.edu/content.php?catoid=15&navoid=2558#education-law-absence-due-to-religious-beliefs>
when planning course activities and assignment due dates.
-
Black Solidarity Day: Plan your syllabus in consideration of Black
Solidarity Day, Monday, November 3.
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/diversity/teach-in.html> You
might alter your class activities on that date to allow students to
participate, or require participation as a substitute for a class on a
different day of that week and provide an incentive.
I hope these resources are useful as you finalize your syllabi, course
sites and course materials. These documents and others as we collect them
will be available to you in the new Syllabus Resources
<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12al17C9u3o1lVgBXkI4M-_YsL7M0h4Yk?usp=drive_link>
folder on the Academic Affairs shared drive. As always, let me know if you
have questions.
