Hello Colleagues,
We have received some great proposals for the concurrent sessions for new
students scheduled for Academic Life Thursday, however:

*We have not yet received enough proposals aimed at exposing students to
the wealth of exciting academic-related opportunities available on campus*.
*The Academic Life Session <https://forms.gle/7yqfPHff4UEpPGkg8> form is
open until Wednesday, August 7th. *

This is a chance to showcase what your discipline does and to get students
interested in participating in courses your department offers. It could
also be related to how activities related to your major assist students in
maintaining health and wellness.
I've pasted a copy of the original call from June 25 under my signature
(please note that this is not the same as the call that went out from Larry
Allen looking for non-academic sessions for Friday or Saturday). Plan for
20 minute sessions, repeated 3 times with different students participating
in active learning. We want to show our new students a vibrant campus,
ready to help them reach their goals.

Hello Colleagues,

Thursday, August 22, 2024 marks the first Welcome to Academic Life day of
the reimagined student orientation program. Students will start the day
with an introduction to their academic departments or staff who advise
undeclared students. In the afternoon, there will be a simulated “my first
class” experience for all attendees, followed by concurrent sessions for
students to learn more about aspects of academic life at Plattsburgh. The
goal is to provide them with a large variety of informative, interesting
and interactive sessions to choose from. It is also a chance for new
students to gain comfort with navigating campus, experiencing faculty and
staff in welcoming settings, and to increase new students’ readiness for
the semester on many levels. This is a chance to help students learn more
about the great things we do here and to get excited about it!

The sessions will be clustered around three main objectives:

   -

Exploration of academic resources and university offices that support
any facet of a student’s academic success (e.g., Learning Center, Library,
   ARO, H.U.B., etc.);
   -

Discovery of the rich academic, scientific and artistic/expressive,
opportunities available on campus, such as our theaters, art, exhibits, the
planetarium, labs, unique features of our majors, and more; and,
   -

Advice about adjusting and succeeding, like guidance in knowing what to
expect in the first weeks and semester (e.g., how to manage time,
common college terminology, choosing a major, your secrets to success,
overcoming homesickness, handling the workload); and help with taking care
of any other academic business (e.g., changing a Cardinal Core Curriculum
course, taking language placement tests, asking questions about first year
   composition).

This should be a vibrant afternoon that supports students' engagement with
faculty and staff, each other, and academic spaces. By providing an
engaging day that combines structure and choice, and exposes students to a
variety of places and people, we also reduce their first-week anxieties
significantly.

Please consider sponsoring an activity–all divisions and departments
welcome! Complete this brief proposal form
<https://forms.gle/PUqKcu9zggyaKHJe7> to share your ideas for a 20 minute
session. All sessions are planned to be repeated 3 times, but if that poses
a problem, let us know.

Thanks in advance for coming up with some great ideas! Contact one of us if
you have any questions.
