Dear Colleagues,

Cardinal Star is SUNY Plattsburgh’s primary tool to communicate with
students and colleagues about things that can impact student retention and
success. It provides an efficient and coordinated approach for the work
that we all do since notes from different sources are all in one place.

With the first week of the semester underway, we ask you to consider how
you can incorporate Cardinal Star into your classes and your efforts to
help students. Here are some things you can do:

   -

   Add your office hours
   <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T8s_Y1AGG5bF7M2fTkni7vZACB_uIEQoo5IAtqAUJo4/edit>
   in Cardinal Star and announce in your class that students can schedule
   appointments with you through Cardinal Star. Wendy Gordon can walk you
   through this in this quick video
   <https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ikTslSTvQk9vhNmRa0t7AoZTEz4Ha1QT/view?usp=sharing>.
   *No more back and forth via email to find a common time! And students
   get automated reminders of their appointments!*
   -

   Send kudos to let students know that you are excited about having them
   in your class and the work they are doing. Raise a flag to report any
   concerns you have regarding a student, including concerns about their class
   behavior. *This can let the student’s success network know how they are
   doing.* Here’s how!

   -

   Send a message
   <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kIi99kHMrMDFsK3qAhWW8FRVUQimT64B1mP9Sz9VP6s/edit?usp=sharing>
   to individuals, a subset or your whole class or a note to your advisees.

As a reminder, when you communicate with students through Cardinal Star, it
is important to keep in mind that with most flags, you are writing directly
to the student, even if the correspondence is also meant to be shared with
the student’s success network. By addressing the student respectfully and
with compassion, you will be inviting them into a conversation about how
they can improve their chances of success.

If you would like to learn more about Cardinal Star and its features,
please schedule a House Call
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1lZNajWHI1hxb0qQq22ZJJwn0T5kMSeizRQn6vO0PH4c/edit>
and a member of the Cardinal Star implementation team will arrange a time
to meet with you either in person or via Zoom.

Wishing you all a successful semester!
