Hello,
The semester is well underway and it is likely you are identifying
accomplishments and areas of concern with students you work with. Using
Cardinal Star to communicate these accolades and concerns documents this
information in a single place for use by students, instructors, and
advisors. The type of role (i.e. instructor, advisor, department chair)
determines specific visibility of information and functions in Cardinal
Star.
There are 5 Kudos that can be raised by instructors and advisors:
-
I Caught You Being Exceptional (can be raised by any faculty or staff
member)
-
Keep Up the Good Work
-
Outstanding Academic Performance
-
Showing Improvement
-
You Are Off to a Great Start
There are 2 academic Flags used by instructors to let students know they
need improvement. Students receive an email that includes comments from the
flag raiser, so comments should offer assistance and a plan for
improvement. Advisors can view these flags on the student folder in
Cardinal Star but are not expected to respond unless there is a significant
pattern emerging:
-
Missing / Late Assignments
-
Poor Performance in Early Assignment
There are 4 more serious academic Flags raised by instructors that should
result in *follow-up by the advisor*. When these flags are raised, students
receive an email with comments and the academic and/or special program
advisors should contact the student. While an email can be a good place to
start, often a phone call or a meeting is better. Advisors can view these
flags in Cardinal Star and will get an email when flags are raised (or as a
‘digest’ message per personal preference settings, adjusted in the user’s
profile):
-
Academic Concern
-
Attendance Concern
-
Course Withdrawal Recommended
-
Danger of Failing
There are 9 Request Help Flags that students can raise. Advisors can view
these flags in Cardinal Star. Here are the flags and the expected primary
responders:
-
I am falling behind in work - Academic support staff
-
I am having difficulty adjusting to college - Academic support staff
-
I need strategies for study and academic skills - Academic support staff
-
I need help in a course - Learning Center for tutoring; Instructor for
suggestions
-
I need help getting course materials - Emergency Relief Services for
possible funding; Instructor for alternatives if available
-
I need help with an emergency financial hardship - Emergency Relief
Services
-
I need help with financial aid - Financial Aid Office
-
I need help from a librarian - Reference librarian
-
I have a question - Cardinal Star Team
The most serious flags raised by faculty and staff will have a *centralized
response* by the identified support professionals:
-
Health Related Concern - Student Health and Counseling Center
-
Mental Health Concern - Student Health and Counseling Center
-
Non-Academic Behavioral Concern - Student Support Services
-
Disability / Need for Accommodations - Student Accessibility Services
To raise a flag, search for the student in the search bar upper right,
click on their name to bring up the student folder, use the +Flag button
and select the appropriate flag from the dropdown. Kudos can be given the
same way. You can select multiple students for flags or kudos on the
Student page. More instructions, information, and screenshots are found in
