[Teaching-Faculty] FACULTY INPUT for Academic Progress Review, Spring 2021
Office of the Provost/VPAA
provost-office at plattsburgh.edu
Mon May 17 12:46:25 UTC 2021
After final grades are processed, the Academic Advising Office, on the
Provost’s behalf, reviews undergraduate students' records relative to the
college's minimum academic progress standards (cumulative GPA of 2.0). This
process determines whether students under review may return next semester
on academic probation or whether we dismiss them from the college.
There continue to be leniency measures in place for first year academic
probation, students under review for the first time, and those who are
below a 2.0 but are gaining momentum. Students who are far below 2.0 or who
have histories of academic review are subject to dismissal. During the
appeal process, we consider many factors, especially the student’s academic
history. We have access to students’ entire academic records and are aware
of the final grades students have earned. We also have access to concerns
or observations you have already shared by email to us or by Cardinal Star
academic flags. All of this, as well as a student’s conduct history, is
taken into account.
*As you wrap up your semester, if you have additional opinions about
academic and/or social behaviors of a student you suspect might fall under
review, we welcome your input.* It is valuable to us during our
deliberations, to know of your support for a student who did attend class
regularly, seek your help, stay engaged, etc., yet still performed poorly.
It is just as valuable to learn if a student behaved inappropriately, acted
irresponsibly, or you are concerned about their ability to progress and
feel strongly that we should not allow them to return to Plattsburgh on
academic probation. You might be the only one who knows about a sudden
performance change in a student affected by COVID/quarantine, struggling
with remote learning, or in extraordinary straits and circumstances.
We realize that the timing of this request is prior to the review process.
However, some faculty are unavailable immediately following the semester
when we conduct our academic progress review

Having perspectives in advance is helpful during our review. *Your written
comments should be submitted to: **advise at plattsburgh.edu*
<advise at plattsburgh.edu>* by Wednesday, May 26, 2021.* Thank you, as
always, for your assistance with this important process.
Sincerely yours,
Elizabeth R. Bernat, Ph.D.
