Campus Community:
Good morning folks,
We are off and running for the Spring 2023 semester for sure! We are
expecting some unusually cold weather this weekend and I wanted to share a
message that was just sent out to your students regarding that weather.
Please do all that you can to support the message to be cautious about the
time spent outside and to bundle up if they must venture outside. Stay
warm wherever you are as well.
All the best
Please be advised that the National Weather Service in Burlington reports
dangerous cold wind chills for Friday into Saturday.
*Hazards and Timing:*
- Wind Chill Warning in effect for all of Vermont & northern New York
from 1 a.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday
- Daytime temperatures of -10° to +5°F on Friday and early Saturday
combined with very brisk northwest winds will create dangerously cold wind
chills of -15° to -35°F.
- Friday night will be extremely cold with temperatures -15° to -25°F
and wind chills of -30° to -45°F.
*Impacts*
- Cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills will increase the
threat of hypothermia and cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as
10 minutes.
- These cold temperatures will have impacts on all mechanical systems,
such as heating systems and vehicles. PLAN ACCORDINGLY!
*Extreme Cold Safety*
- Avoid any prolonged exposure to the elements, frostbite can occur in
less than 30 minutes.
- Dress for the weather in warm, breathable layers, gloves, hat, and
sturdy boots.
- Make sure your vehicle has a Winter Survival Kit in case you become
stranded, which includes; blankets, water, food, hand/foot warmers,
sleeping bags, and at least half a tank of fuel.
- Protect your pets; bring them inside whenever possible.
