Dear SUNY Plattsburgh Parent or Guardian,

As we safely welcome our Cardinal Family back to campus, we want you to
know that we are dedicated to providing your student opportunities for
getting involved in campus life. Involvement in student activities and
fraternal organizations helps your student connect with new friends to take
advantage of the full SUNY Plattsburgh experience.

Fraternity & Sorority Life began on our campus more than 100 years ago and
has grown to include 16 active organizations, more than 500 students, and
thousands of alumni. Fraternities and sororities promote Friendship,
Scholarship, Leadership, and Service - the principles upon which these
values-driven groups were founded.

*You can find information about fraternity/sorority life, including
specific data about each of our organizations and the policies about
joining **by clicking here* <https://tinyurl.com/PlattsburghFSLife>*. *

*Fraternal Excellence Initiative*

We are excited to tell you about our method of annually evaluating the
performance of each fraternity and sorority. We are proud to announce that the
following organizations have achieved the highest ranking as Chapters of
Excellence. *First**-year students are not permitted to join a fraternal
organization until their second semester or later. However, exceptions may
be made to join a Chapter of Excellence with a parent or guardian's
permission. *All of the following organizations have combined GPAs that are
higher than campus averages.

*Campus Approved Organizations*

Our students are only permitted to join campus-approved organizations
listed on our website. It is important that we provide you with
information pertaining to a former fraternity that has lost college
recognition. It has been determined by the College that these types of
groups interfere with the academic mission of the institution. Therefore,
we take steps to discourage affiliation by students with these groups.
*Students
who choose to join may subject themselves to College disciplinary
procedures, including suspension or dismissal since the groups operate
outside of College policy. These organizations are not affiliated with the
College and therefore are not subject to college group regulations and
education regarding hazing, alcohol, drugs, sexual assault, fire safety,
etc.*

● *Alpha Chi Rho (ΑΧΡ), *also known as AXP, the Crows or 147, was
closed by both the College and National Fraternity in Spring 2014 after
multiple violations of college policy, including disorderly conduct and
violation of previous sanctions related to obstruction of college
activities. This group can be identified by the colors garnet and white and
may use a crow as a mascot. Their last known place of residence was 147
Brinkerhoff Street.

We encourage you to discuss fraternity/sorority life with your student in
order to help them clarify their intentions to join. Please note that more
than 70% of current fraternity/sorority members report that they had no
intention of joining one of these groups when they began their first year
at the college. Therefore, even if your student does not indicate interest
at this point, they may change their mind. Resources to assist you with
this conversation can be found here

.

We are ready to assist your student in ensuring a successful collegiate
experience and believe that fraternity and sorority life can be a positive
part of your student’s development. If you have any questions or concerns
about any of this information, please feel free to contact us.
