Building an Emergency Supplies Kit

Do You Have an Emergency Kit?

Emergencies can happen with little or no warning. A power outage, severe
weather, water issue, or other emergency could leave you without access to
some of the things you normally rely on.

Having a few basic supplies on hand can make a difference. Whether you live
on campus, off campus, or commute to SUNY Plattsburgh, take some time to
put together an emergency kit that works for you.

Consider including:

   - Water – Keep enough water on hand for drinking and basic sanitation.
   - Food – Nonperishable foods that are easy to store and eat.
   - Flashlight and extra batteries
   - Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
   - First aid supplies
   - Medications and personal medical needs
   - Personal hygiene and sanitation supplies
   - Cell phone charger and portable power bank
   - Manual can opener
   - Cash – In case ATMs or electronic payment systems are unavailable.
   - Copies of important documents
   - Pet or service animal supplies, if applicable.
   - Other items you may need based on your individual circumstances


If you live in a residence hall or apartment, think about what you would
need if you were without power, water, heat, or other services for an
extended period of time. Students who live off campus should also consider
having a small go-bag ready in case they need to leave their residence
quickly.

You don't need to purchase everything at once. Start with what you already
have and add items as you can.

Take a few minutes today to prepare. A little planning now can make an
emergency easier to manage later.
