Institute
*Investigating the Spatial Variability of Carbon Stabilization with Metals
in Toolik Lake Sediments*
Lakes are critical zones for carbon (C) transformations, with sediments
storing large amounts of organic carbon (OC). Rising temperatures in
high-latitude regions are driving changes in permafrost extent, altering
total lake area across the landscape, and affecting C cycling,
greenhouse gas emissions, and storage in lake sediments. To investigate the
vulnerability of OC-metal complexes, we analyzed sediments and porewaters
from Toolik Lake. Preliminary results reveal spatial variation in metal
signatures, and suggest differences in microbial respiration, highlighting
hotspots for organic matter degradation.
*Friday October 31st** 3:30**pm. *
*Hudson 106*
*Reception prior to the talk at 3:00*
*Prizes for best Environmental Themed Costume!!*
