*Dr. Chelsea Smith*, Senior Research Scientist, Adirondack Watershed
Institute

Dr. Chelsea Smith joined AWI as a Senior Research Scientist in the winter
of 2025. As a biogeochemist, her expertise lies in nutrient and carbon
cycling, with a particular focus on redox chemistry. In her role, Chelsea
provides leadership to the organization’s scientific program, oversees
research projects, and fosters opportunities for student engagement in
scientific research. Before joining AWI, Chelsea served as a postdoctoral
researcher at Kent State University, where she investigated the
interactions among carbon, iron, and manganese in Toolik Lake on Alaska’s
North Slope. She holds a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from
Kent State University and an M.S. and B.S. in Biology from the University
of Akron.
